Amidst this wild and crazy ride we call life, there are a few ideas that stand out every once in a while. Good advice can be hard to come by. Thankfully, there are some standard jewels that we can all cling to. Here are 5 pieces of advice that we must never forget:
- It is better to remain quiet and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. -Abraham Lincoln
All too often people can speak aloud, sometimes never realizing that they spewed foolish information. This advice lets the listener know that it’s better to be thought a fool, than speak foolishly and prove it. Proverbs 17:28 says “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” I’d rather be wise and discerning than a fool. Wouldn’t you?
2. The best things in life aren’t things.
Sometimes the best things in life can be moments or people instead of material things. This saying tell us not to focus on the material, but go deeper. As soon as I think along these lines I immediately create a gratitude list. Who, or what am I grateful for and why. I always feel better.
3. Most of the things you worry about never happen.
Us women can be the world’s worth at worrying ometimes. Are our kids ok? Did I thaw out anything for dinner? Did I leave the iron on? All three are classic things to worry about in a day. But, what about more serious things, like worrying you have cancer or another major illness?
4. Faith is simply Belief with shoes on.
Faith is defined as “allegiance to duty or a person : loyalty.” Belief is “a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing.” The act of putting trust in someone (belief), or in God develops the loyalty and unwavering allegiance of Faith.”
5. Just keep swimming. -Dory
Our memory challenged friend Dory, from Finding Nemo reminds us to “Just Keep Swimming.” When times get tough and we aren’t sure whether or not we can get through it, just keep trying. Keep trudging down the road of life and you will make it through on the other side. What a fantastic mantra. Some other sayings like: Keep on Keeping On and If At First You Don’t Succeed, Try, Try Again, are tried and true sayings.
These fabulous little gems of advice can inspire and motivate us. In our current state of affairs, a little gentle encouragement is priceless. We all should be so blessed.
