Think Change is the Exception? You’re Wrong! It’s the Norm

You can’t hide from it, you can’t completely avoid it. No matter how happy you are with what you have, change is going to come along. Just don’t let it throw you for a loop.

The minute you think life is well-ordered and just about perfect, something is going to come along to change everything. It might be a new love, the loss of an old love, an unexpected baby, a job lay-off, or a great new opportunity. Whatever it is, those changes are going to come at you and, if you’re not prepared, you’ll be laid flat on the ground.

If you are not prepared, you may lay there, figuratively speaking, for a good long time before you find the strength to get up and put your feet back on the path. And no matter how much you would like things to be otherwise, change won’t wait around for you to hem and haw and make up your mind.

Everything changes. Get used to it. No, embrace the change! If you believe that change is just an opportunity to make a course correction and improve your life, it will be. I am not saying that with the right attitude, nothing really bad will ever happen to you. I am saying that even the worst set-back can show point the way to what you should do next.

I’m not talking about sad occurrences such as a death in the family. Go ahead and mourn, but prepare yourself to get up and move forward again. It will take longer than recovering from a lost job or a failed attempt at writing a novel. But you can recover and go on with life.

The key take away here is that you can’t let changes trap you in fear and doubt. Take a deep breath and continue. To paraphrase the quote below, you have to step outside your comfort zone to transform your life. You may be surprised at the resulting transformation!

It's only after you've stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform. -- Roy T. Bennett
